Steps To Take To Nail Your Interview
If you want to land a job in this economy the interview is important. You can expect your resume
to do all the talking, but there's hundreds of people who handed in an identical one. You need to come off to the interviewer as special in their eyes.
Firstly, are you dressed to impress? Make sure you show up to your interview looking professional. Would you hire you? Wear clothing appropriate for the type of job you're interviewing for. Business casual at the least. A nice shirt, nice pants, and shoes.
Make sure to highlight any skills you have that you think would be relevant to the interviewer! They want to know what you can do for their company. Do you have any special talents or projects that you've worked on? If it's relevant bring it to the forefront. This is especially helpful if you're trying to get into a new industry you have no work experience in.
Just because the work was pro bono or for your own enjoyment doesn't mean it isn't valuable. If you've built a great project even for your own purposes you should show it off. This could be a valuable real world skillset to get you in the door!
Remain optimistic and let the interviewer know how serious you are about wanting this job. They want to know you'll be a hard worker and want to stick around! Somebody who flakes from job to job generally is not a great asset. The money the company will spend training you will be wasted if you leave in three months to do something else.
If you do have relevant work experience make sure to ask your old bosses for a great references if they liked your work there. You can also highlight any successful projects you've done there and that can help you get into a new job. Even if the job is unrelated it may be helpful in showing your work ethic.
Even in a new industry your new boss will appreciate that you were a hard worker in your other projects. Have you done anything interesting? Even non-work related. Side businesses, volunteer work, ect. All of these things can help set you a part from the crowd and have the interviewer remember you when it comes time to hire somebody. Don't blend into the crowd too much or you'll be lost in a sea of prospects! Use appropriate interview techniques to get yourself into the job of your dreams!
