Putting the Social Media to Work For You In Your Job Search
Everything you've heard about the power of using social media to find a job has progressed past the rumor stage and turned into a prominent reality.
Recruiters are avidly using the sites in their attempts to match employees to job openings, because they've realized how effective this method has become. If you've been reluctant to base your job search on Internet technology, it's time to rethink your position. With 98% of recruiters relying on LinkedIn in their job searches, it has become the perfect venue to use to reach those you are interested in attracting.
Recruiters aren't the only ones using the media sites in their job searches. Employers are using them, too. In fact, 93% of employers are using LinkedIn, 42% are using Twitter, and 33% are utilizing Facebook. Around 86% of all active job seekers have social media accounts, and if you don't start using them to enhance your own search, you're going to be left out in the cold. By developing a large number of contacts through the media sites, you can vastly improve your chances of being noticed and finding the job you've been looking for. This technology is available at your fingertips, and failing to keep up with the current trends will likely hurt you.
Human resource officers with various companies are screening candidates using social media. Here are some of the things they're looking for which could be used to your advantage if your information is there:
* learning more about your personality
* determining how professional an image you present
* getting background information about you
* examining the range of your interests and activities
* discovering how good your communication skills are
* learning about your creativity
* checking your references
As long as the profiles you post online provide them with positive information in these areas, using the social media can give you a big edge in securing the job you're looking for.
Just as you will need to provide information for employers telling them exactly the type of job you're seeking and your qualifications for it, you'll be able to get a better idea of companies who are offering what you want by researching them on the social media sites. Although you may think that you'd rather have any job than no job at all, the wrong fit isn't going to work for anyone, and you'll just end up searching for another job again later. Finding the information you need in advance will help you do a better search for an employer you feel will be the best fit for you.
