IT Consultant Jobs
What is an IT Consultant?
Consultants offer skills and knowledge to businesses that are looking for advice, recommendations or specialized work (for example programming, designing, writing or business analysis) from industry experts. The Fuqua School of Business Consulting Club defines consulting as "the business of providing advice to firms in trouble, on the move, or trying to do what they do better, faster and more cheaply."
What to expect as an IT consultant
A first year consultant should expect to be involved in activities such as background research and number crunching, while they build up their skills to be ready to tackle more problem solving and client contact in their second and third years.
IT consultancy is a wide field and of course each company has different needs, however some of the general tasks you could be asked to undertake are as follows:
- Creating financials
- Performing competitor benchmarking analysis
- Identifying savings opportunities
- Identifying possible product/service enhancements
- Presenting recommendations
How to land IT Consultant Jobs
Many companies looking to hire IT consultants are looking for experts from within the industry. There are generally speaking 3 types of people who look to become IT consultants.
Graduates are often keen to become consultants due to the lure of high pay, and more and more large companies are beginning to take on new graduates as consultants, specifically through their graduate schemes. If you are a graduate looking to become an IT consultant it is important to give yourself credibility by gaining as much experience as possible.
2) Career Changers
In some cases people have had a hobby or side business/interest for many years and decide that they are keen to explore this as a career. Their interest usually sets them in good stead to be able to learn quickly and bring knowledge to a company – their past experience outside of their new chosen career can often bring a new way of looking at an industry and help them to make recommendations other consultants wouldn't have seen.
3) Seasoned experts
Seasoned experts make up the majority of IT consultants. They have already proved themselves in their field and have come to be known as industry experts.
Interviewing for IT consultant jobs
Interviewing for IT consultant jobs can often be more intense than interviewing for other IT positions. Candidates are often required to supply additional information about themselves and their experience and can be grilled on analytical questions often relating to hypothetical situations. This is all done to see how you handle pressure and to investigate the way in which you are able to analyse situations and solve problems.
