How A Overlooked 100 Year Old Advancement Will Help You Land A Job
Author: Justin
Now that so many jobs are being advertised online and offline it's very tempting to simply blast your resume out and see what happens. This could be called the shotgun approach.
I believe however, that is not the best way to hunt for a job. I believe in a snipers approach. In the shotgun approach what tends to happen is you end up applying for anything and everything even remotely related to a sales associate job. The problem is you end up losing track of what you sent where.
A different approach
I believe you need to take the sniper approach which is much more targeted. Below is a technique that you can try for a job you really want!
Most job ads have contact details displayed on the ad. Once you have prepared your perfect sales associate resume there's a trick you can use to really differentiate yourself from the pack.
Use a technology that's been around for 100 years - the telephone. Yes, i'm being completely serious, it's truly amazing how powerful the phone is, and yet equally amazing just how much the poor old phone has become so under-utilized.
The best way to use the Phone!
Of course you "know" how to use the phone, you pick it up and dial but are you using it properly? Once you have submitted your resume call the contact in the ad with a simple follow up message.
Say something similar to this: "Good afternoon my name is Justin and I just wanted to check to see if you successfully received my resume for the job xyz" I'd also ask a some further questions about the role.
The Strength Of The Phone
Making this telephone call does a few VERY powerful things.
Power 1 - Your call essentially causes the recruiter or hiring agent to check and look for your resume. Talk about getting to the top of the pile fast you've told them to go get your resume and review straight away!
Power 2 - Your call demonstrates how keen you are for the job. The simple fact you've followed up tells the recruiter that your interested not just taking the shotgun approach. You're a sniper.
Power 3 - Your call puts you square within the mind of the recruiter. They are going to check your resume right there on the spot! This means they're going to review what you are offering and if you're what they are looking for they are going to pursue you further.
Did you think the 100 year old phone was still that powerful, I didn't think so!
So follow up your resume with a phone call, you'll be amazed at what a 100 year old technology can still do.
