Grow your network for tomorrow: 7 ways to be a better co-worker today
When looking to grow our network,
we often think back on people that we have met in the past including old supervisors or ex co-workers that could help us. Who better to vouch for our work than someone we have already worked with? Hopefully, our ex co-workers have a good impression of our work and our personal qualities. Make a conscious effort to make a great impression with your co-workers today so that you can help each other later. How does one do so?
1. By producing quality work
2. Helping others at every opportunity
3. Being someone that people can rely upon
4. Having a good attitude and positive demeanor
5. Being honest and hardworking
6. Achieving success without stepping on people to get ahead
7. Knowing how to get along well with people from all different backgrounds and experience levels
It can be difficult to work backwards and try to create a different impression with people that we have already worked with. Make a conscious effort to build strong relationships every day. I count several former co-workers as some of my strongest professional contacts. We worked closely together to meet organizational objectives and I did my best to be a “good co-worker”. I have often relied upon them throughout the years for references, honest feedback, job leads and suggestions. Additionally, they know that they can count on me. I can think of more than a handful of people that I have worked with that I speak to at least every six weeks.
